Flax and Borage Oils May possibly Increase Skin Health from Within

Flax and Borage Oils May Boost Skin Health from WithinJanuary 2008 New research from Germany and France suggests that supplements containing flaxseed or borage oil may protect skin against reddening and improve skin health from within. The omega-3 and omega-6-rich oils from flax and borage also led to a decrease in skin roughness and so-called skin scaling, according to findings published in the British Journal of Nutrition. There is a growing body of science focusing on the potential benefits of nutrients to boost skin health from within, with lutein, lycopene and superoxide dismutase (SOD) having been reported to improve skin health. The same researchers behind the new study previously reported that flavonol-rich chocolate may protect against skin reddening (Journal of Nutrition Vol. 136, pp.165-1569). The researchers, led by Wilhelm Stahl from the Heinrich-Heine University in Dusseldorf, recruited 45 non-smoking, healthy women between the ages of 18 and 65 and randomly assigned them to one of three groups. Two groups received daily supplements of flaxseed oil or borage oil (2.2 grams of total fatty acids), while a third group received medium-chain fatty acids as the placebo. Skin irritation was achieved using nicotinate applied to the skin. This would induce inflammation and reddening from the skin, the researcher said. According to the analysis of the oils, flaxseed consisted predominantly from the omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), but some omega-6 and monounsaturated oleic acid were present. Borage oil consisted predominantly of the omega-6 fatty acids gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and linoleic acid (LA), while oleic acid was also present in relatively high amounts. After six and 12 weeks of supplementation with flaxseed, an increase in blood levels of ALA was observed, while increases in GLA were recorded in the group receiving borage oil. Following nicotinate treatment, the researchers noted a significant decrease in reddening of the skin in the flaxseed and borage oil groups of 45% and 35%, respectively, compared to baseline values. No differences were recorded in the placebo group. Measurements of water loss from the skin showed that the oil supplements were associated with decreases of about 10% after six weeks, with only the flaxseed oil group showing further decreases at the end of 12 weeks (25%). The roughness and scaling??dry peeling skin??was also decreased significantly after 12 weeks of flaxseed and borage oil supplementation, with no differences in the placebo group. Dermatologists Think it’s Time to End Our Reliance on the Sun as a Major Source of Vitamin D

Did You Know? Dermatologists Think it’s Time to End Our Reliance on the Sun as a Major Source of Vitamin D August 2006A new review by dermatology experts suggests that supplements and diet, rather than sunlight, should be one??s source of vitamin D. The dermatologists suggest that the trade-off between obtaining vitamin D from sunlight exposure and the effects of photo-aging and skin cancer was sensible in our past, when life spans were not long. But in today’s society, where life spans have doubled, and potentially 30% of Caucasians will develop skin cancer, the trade-off no longer makes sense. The conclusion is partly in response to recent research that proposed 10 to 15 minutes of unprotected exposure to midday sun as a good source of vitamin D.Journal from the American Academy of Dermatologists 54(2):301-317, 2006

Compounds in Berries Might Lessen Sun Damage

Compounds in Berries May Lessen Sun DamageMay 2009New research shows that a compound found in berries, nuts and other fruits might help prevent wrinkles and repair skin damage caused by the sun.Researchers in Korea applied ellagic acid, an antioxidant found in raspberries, strawberries, cranberries and pomegranates, to human skin cells in the lab and to the skin of hairless mice that had been exposed to strong, ultraviolet rays. In the human cells, ellagic acid reduced the destruction of collagen and inflammatory response, both major causes of wrinkles. For eight weeks, 12 hairless mice were exposed three times a week to increasing ultraviolet radiation. The exposure would have been strong enough to cause sunburn and skin damage in humans, according to the researchers, from Hallym University in South Korea.Half of the exposed mice were given daily topical applications of ellagic acid, even on the days in which they did not receive UV exposure. Ellagic acid was not applied to the other mice. The mice that did not receive ellagic acid developed wrinkles and thickening with the skin that indicates sun damage. The mice that received the ellagic acid showed less wrinkle formation, according to the study, which was presented at the Experimental Biology 2009 meeting in New Orleans. In human skin cells, it appears that ellagic acid protects against ultraviolet damage by blocking production of matrix metalloproteinase enzymes that break down collagen and reduce the expression of ICAM, a molecule involved with inflammation.Presented at Experimental Biology 2009
